Thinking about Shopify for your new website? Read this first 👀
I get asked this a lot. And I've had a few clients come to me after outgrowing Shopify… or getting a shock when they added up their monthly app bills.
Here's what I walk them through first 👇
1. You actually own your website
With Shopify, you're renting space on their platform. If you ever leave, your theme and a lot of your setup stay behind.
✔️ Fix: WordPress is open-source. Your site, files and content are yours. Change hosts, change developers, take it with you any time.
2. The monthly costs add up quietly
The Shopify plan is only the start. Reviews, filters, bookings, subscriptions… most of those are paid apps, and many are billed every month.
✔️ Fix: WordPress + WooCommerce has thousands of free or one-off plugins. You pay for good hosting and choose exactly what you add.
3. Content and SEO are built in, not bolted on
Shopify locks your URLs into set formats (/products/, /collections/, /pages/) and its blog is pretty basic.
✔️ Fix: WordPress gives you full control of your URLs, a proper blogging platform, and tools like Rank Math or Yoast to fine-tune every page for Google.
4. It grows with your business
Need bookings, a members area, online courses or a quote form down the track? On Shopify that's usually another subscription or a workaround.
✔️ Fix: WordPress can do all of it on one site. Shop, blog, bookings, members, no starting over.
Shopify is renting. WordPress is owning the house 🙌
To be fair, if you're purely selling products and want completely hands-off, Shopify can work. But if your website is how people find you, get to know you and buy from you, WordPress gives you room to grow.

3 things worth checking on your WordPress website

3 things worth checking on your WordPress website (that you might not think about!).
It’s easy to get your website up and running and then forget to check how it’s actually performing. Here are 3 things I’d recommend checking every now and then.
**1. Is your website loading quickly?**
A slow website can put people off, and they might leave before they’ve even seen what you offer. You can run your website through Google PageSpeed Insights to check how it’s performing and see what could be improved.
**2. Are your contact forms working?**
This one’s easy to overlook! Test your contact forms every now and then to make sure messages are coming through. You don’t want to be missing enquiries without even realising it.
**3. Are your website backups running properly?**
Having backups is great, but it’s worth checking they’re actually running successfully. You don’t want to find out you don’t have a recent backup when you need one!
These are a few little things that can easily be forgotten when you’re busy running a business.
When was the last time you checked yours?

If your website isn’t showing up on Google, this is one of the first things I’d check.
Head to Settings → Reading and make sure “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” is unticked.
This setting is often enabled while a website is being built... then accidentally left on after launch.
I’ve found it on more live websites than I’d like to admit.
While you’re there, it’s also worth checking:
✔️ Settings → Permalinks – Make sure you’re using Post name for clean, SEO-friendly URLs.
✔️ Settings → Discussion – If you don’t use blog comments, turn them off. Otherwise, make sure comments require manual approval to help reduce spam.
It only takes a couple of minutes, but these are three settings I check on every WordPress website.

A little WordPress tip... One of the biggest risk

A little WordPress tip...
One of the biggest risks I see on WordPress websites is outdated plugins.
I know updates can be easy to ignore (or a bit scary if you’ve had one break your site before!), but keeping your plugins up to date is one of the simplest things you can do to help keep your website secure.
The important part isn’t just clicking Update. It’s making sure there’s a backup first, and checking everything afterwards.
That’s exactly how I update my clients’ websites, so if something doesn’t quite go to plan, I can restore it and sort it out before it becomes a bigger issue.
Website maintenance is one of those jobs that’s easy to push to the bottom of the list... until something goes wrong.
If updating your website feels a little overwhelming, or you’d simply rather have someone else take care of it, that’s exactly what my WordPress Care Plans are designed for. I’ll look after the updates, backups and security checks, so you can get back to running your business.
